Yamaha 88-Key Touch-Sensitive Piano-Style Light-Weight Keyboard - DGX505 Best Quality

My daughter saved up to buy this for herself. She also plays an expensive keyboard at church, but she loves this one more. The sound is great, it has all the features she wanted, and it is portable enough for her to take with her if she needs to. The quality is very good, as well. One of our best purchases!Get more detail about Yamaha 88-Key Touch-Sensitive Piano-Style Light-Weight Keyboard - DGX505.

SP2 76 Key Stage Digital Piano Get it now!

[With increased use, I'm becoming increasingly disenchanted with this machine. The manual spends more time on USB/MIDI/computer talk than the practical needs of the performing musician (as opposed to the "programmer"). The 16 set-ups are absurd as are the 64 programs--every spacey effect in the book but no engineer thought to include a simple piano/bass split + layered ride cymbal? The Autosplit feature (in "Program mode") is useless because, unlike the PC2, it doesn't raise the left-hand pitches by an octave while simultaneously lowering the right-hand pitches by same so that both hands will be playing in the appropriate register. Consequently, the user can transpose one hand but then discovers that the non-split notes are now in the wrong octave and can't be transposed separately. The only solution is to wipe the slate clean, start with a blank set-up, and construct each program from scratch. It's laborious work, best begun well in advance of any gig, and done on a program-per-day basis. So many musicians may as well forget about "Program" mode altogether and concentrate exclusively on constructing their own "Set-Ups." Finally, in the last couple of years Kurzweil has released or re-deployed the few specialists who knew anything specific about their complex computer-instruments. Whereas the company used to be responsive to befuddled users' questions, their customer support is now virtually non-existent. Kurzweil seems to be going out of their way, even with the PC3, to limit their instruments to advanced computer specialists or to musicians who simply push the buttons and play whatever programs are available at the highest surface level.]

Until the SP2 appeared comparatively recently, I had claimed the Kurzweil SP76 as the least expensive keyboard that a self-respecting professional performer might be able to "get away with" on the job. Now I can revise that claim, bestowing the same on the SP2. The main advantage of the SP2? There are actually two: first, it doubles the number of voices (programs, patches, objects, or sounds, if you prefer), providing 64 instead of a mere 32 (the SP76 did not even have a vibes program); 2nd, it permits you to split the keyboard, assigning different internal sounds to the various zones created by the split.

The SP2 costs about 33% more than it's predecessor, but the above features make the hike worthwhile. Formerly, I was importing bass or vibes sounds from a module velcroed to the keyboard and spending tedious hours with the MIDI set-up. No longer. And for "popular" music, 76 keys is all you need; 88 weighted keys will add at least 20 pounds to the package. I would have purchased a PC1se, a PC2, or a PC3 with 76 keys except for all of the gratuitous add-ons and complications (these are "programmers'" hobby kits) plus the extra weight. With the SP2, I can still, as was the case with the SP76, toss the instrument in a gig bag and set up in no time (I've grown out of the need to haul monstrous, heavy keyboards, sometimes just to play Basie fills in a big band!). If I'm ever awarded a roadie, I'll pick up a Roland RD700 or Kurz PC3x or Korg M50 (the fully weighted 88-key version) or the comparable Yamaha fully-weighted 88-key monster. But for now, safety, sanity and common sense all point to the SP2(76).

If you want more voices (time-consuming, complicated) and onboard speakers (like weighted keys, requiring dollies, helpers and hernias), get an SP3x. But now you've entered a nebulous territory that I've found even Kurzweil reps have no good answers for: when you get down to it, what's the difference between an SP3 and a PC3? (I find the SP, with its protruding knobs, a "gaudier" instrument than the PC design).

Back to the SP, Kurzweil shows its lack of understanding of a musicians' needs when the company doesn't provide a dedicated button permitting "layering" a ride cymbal on to the left-hand bass sounds walking 4/4 lines (the basis of ALL "swing," for Pete's sake). Instead the company throws in an automated drum machine (!) or trumpets its "Take 6" voices (a great vocal group, but I prefer to play them on my iPod or CD player. When I once played them in public on a Kurzweil PC2, the other musicians merely laughed at me--very dismissively). Until companies like Kurzweil take the music and the musician seriously, no real musician is going to record an album on any of their hundreds of Triple Strike "acoustic" pianos. Hundreds of great pianists have had the opportunity--from Oscar Peterson and Bill Evans to Keith Jarrett and Brad Mehldau, though none has lowered himself to that degree. (Even Stevie stuck to a concert grand piano (and nothing more) at the Michael Jackson memorial.)

Electric pianos are still the realm of techno-engineers and gear-heads. These companies have got all they can handle to recreate the sound of an analog synth or Rhodes, let alone come up with a respectable piano. But at least they could listen to, say, Ahmad or Monty Alexander or Benny Green and try to service an actual musician's needs. That'll change if consumers are more demanding, and if musicians are allowed to advise the designers and manufacturers.

[Warning: What ever keyboard you decide on, make sure there's a return/exchange policy you can live with. I've frequently been impressed by keyboards in the store, only to realize after the first job that this infatuation was no more than a single-night honeymoon. The keyboard will always sound different in a different room, with a different amp, with more time to allow your ears to be bombarded by what you thought sounded like a "real" piano. (If you plan to test at the store, bring your best headphones to plug into each piano.) Kurzweil wants its keyboards to be perceived as "performer's" rather than "programmer's" instruments. If so, consumers need to keep the pressure on their engineer / designers, demanding instruments suited less for an engineer than a musician.]

[P.S. The SP2 is not, technically speaking, "weighted." See the Young Chang / Kurzweil site.]Get more detail about SP2 76 Key Stage Digital Piano.

Yamaha EZ30 Decide Now

I have this model of the Yamaha keyboard collection, and I have to say: it's the best model I've ever owned (save the older one I gave away, which was also a Yamaha). The older one would probably be about 14 years old by now, and I remember it very well. It was probably my first one with songs like 'House of the Rising Sun' 'Troika' 'New Age'. I've played the EZ-30 keyboard for three years now and it's sounding like new; nothing sounds outdated. It's timeless! I truly recommend this model to anyone wishing to learn how to play the piano as it assists you in both mistakes and accomplishments through lessons. It provides you with voice feedback. The keys also have a light-up feature, perfect for beginners and even for experts! It provides you with an array of realistic-sounding instruments as well as unbeatable sound effects: from helicopter to streams to birds to thunder. Songs include 'Celebration' , 'Happy Birthday' , as well as classics: 'Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me' 'Greensleeves' 'Fur Elise' and patriotic melodies. Everything is accessible, you're able to record and download your own or pre-created songs. In summary, I give it five stars for its sophistication and ease of play.Get more detail about Yamaha EZ30.

Casio CTK-5000-STAD 61-Key Digital Music Keyboard Right now

we just got this a few days ago, and are very happy with it. The sound is very realistic for piano, and the action feels good. We were using an older borrowed keyboard, and were pleasantly surprised at the playablility and sound quality.

we bought from JR, because at the time it was slightly cheaper than Amazon, even with shipping, but the price has gone up.

This keyboard came with a stand, probably a $20 value, which is a bonus. It shows it in the picture, but not in the product description. We just had to get a bench and we were set.

We've just started exploring the settings. The first we adjusted was the touch sensitivity, which makes it louder the harder (technically, the faster) you hit the key, like a real piano. It has 3 setting choices: off, 1, and 2, with 2 being most sensitive. On 2 there is a pretty wide range of volume with key stroke, from very quiet on up, mimicking a real piano; not just quiet and loud.

Its still new to us, but we are very pleased with what we got for the money.

Lowest Price Casio WK-1630 76-Note Touch-Sensitive Portable Electronic Keyboard

I have owned this keyboard for about six months, and although I'm extremely happy with it, there are a few drawbacks that anyone who is considering this keyboard should know about. So I'll try to make good as list as possible.

THE GOOD:
*realistic sounds (#19 is better than a real drawbar organ!)
*good DSP settings
*32 polyphony
*Alot of presets, so you can save your favorite sounds
*Powerful mixing board
*Layer and Split settings, which means that up to four sounds can be playing at once
*Very light weight, especially compaired to some Yamaha's and Rolands I've tried to pick up.
*Many tones, some very funny, such as Helicopter, Applause, and GunShot.
*Many different beats.
*The LCD screen is nice.
*Casio Cord is very accurate.

THE OKAY:
*The onboard speakers are loud, but the louder they get, the worse the quality. Its only a problem for me on a couple of the sounds.
*Only two songs can be saved at a time.
*The volume is very sensitive.
*Keys aren't weighted. I don't mind it, but some do.
*Touch sensitivity is okay. At it's highest, it's just okay, nothing like a real piano at all. But since the keys aren't weighted, you're not going to get much better.

THE BAD:
*Really big. Really really big.
*Feels flimsy. I've made scratches on mine by hitting my ring against it.
*Some of the sounds are the same, such as the violins

I bought my keyboard used without a manual. I've figured out most of the settings, such as how to mix, but there are still some which I haven't figured out yet. I would suggest getting the manual, even though it is very easy to understand and use. Like I said, it came used, and I've put it through alot (like a rainstorm, being dropped on the ground, ALOT of travel without a case in the car), and it's still holding up great. The speaker quality isn't an issue with me because if I want it loud, I can plug it into my amp. It does get very loud with it's own speakers (altough a few of the settings cause the sound to waver).

I absolutely love my keyboard. I've compaired it to others, such as the high end of the Yamaha DGX series, and I like my Casio much better.

Buy it!Get more detail about Casio WK-1630 76-Note Touch-Sensitive Portable Electronic Keyboard.

Low Price Behringer UMX25 U-Control 25-Key USB/MIDI Controller Keyboard

I bought this instead of the Oxygen 8, because of the software package. In a nutshell, it sucks comparitively. The software SOUNDS better, but in reality it's difficult to install and is not easy to use. The keyboard has "issues" when it comes to... Well just about everything. I was trained midi recording with an oxygen 8 and let me tell you. It was a lot more straight forward. Apparently Behringer is a crappy brand name. I found that out a bit to late, but all my musician friends pretty much tell me it's the bottem of the barrel. GREAT. Well it doesn't like Sony Acid Pro 5 or Music Maker XP...Get more detail about Behringer UMX25 U-Control 25-Key USB/MIDI Controller Keyboard.

Save Yamaha P155 Contemporary Piano with Mahogany Top Board, Black

OK, this is our first DP, so we are not experts... Having said that, I tested the hammer action and compared to real acoustic pianos and find the P-155 is quite realistic, even on the heavy side (which I think is good, gives you good strength if you ever decide do go up to a real grand piano!). The sounds it produces are very good (at least the "piano 1", we only goofed with the others---but the others sound good too, the "chorus" sounds really nice playing Beethoven's 9th!). The "piano 1" sound is composed of 4 different samples (for the different sound levels) so it sounds very realistic at all levels of play, from pp to ff. We also like that you can wear headphones and not bother the family if you want to play late at night. Finally, the USB storage allows MIDI files to be recorded and/or brought from a computer to serve as a second pair of hands. The user interface is clean and relatively simple to use.

Overall I am very pleased and I do not think you can get this good quality at a lower price point.

BTW: this piano is made in Japan, always a good sign in terms of quality.Get more detail about Yamaha P155 Contemporary Piano with Mahogany Top Board, Black.

Discount Christmas Lap Harp Music Maker

The box says that the instrument comes tuned for immediate enjoyment. It did not and I am still trying to get it tuned. Because two notes share one string (the strings on the harp are looped), it is hard to tune it. You can fix one of the notes and mess up the other one. There are no instructions on how to tune one note without "untuning" the other one. You can purchase a brochure on tuning for $5 plus $8 shipping, but that should have come with the instrument.Get more detail about Christmas Lap Harp Music Maker.

Cheapest Casio WK3300AD 76 Key Electronic Keyboard with Power Supply

I recently purchased a Yamaha DGX-220 after owning one of the Casio WK keyboards. I was sorely disappointed, not only because I have used Yamaha keyboards I loved in the past, but also because I paid more for the Yamaha, and it couldn't hold a candle to what I could do when I owned my Casio WK 3700 (I didn't want to give it up, but I had to at the time). I purchased the DGX based on the many "It's better than the WK-3000's reviews" and have regretted it from opening the box. I'm selling my Yamaha to go back to the Casio. Now that it has an SD card slot and USB interface, I can't think of anything that would make it any better (well, except maybe 88 weighted keys, but we're talking about features NO KEYBOARD has for the amount of money you'd pay for one of these). Unless all you care about is strictly playing piano, I'd definately stick with the WK Series!Get more detail about Casio WK3300AD 76 Key Electronic Keyboard with Power Supply.

Cheap Yamaha CP300 Stage Piano

Good piano sound, plays like a real piano, has good choir sound, the string sounds could be better, especially when blending with the piano. And then there are all the MIDI sounds that I didn't realize came with it, and I still haven't gotten to the bottom of all the features.

I like the way the often-used functions are laid out as buttons, that is a good design and a good implementation.Get more detail about Yamaha CP300 Stage Piano.

Buying Alesis QS8.2 64 Voice Expandable Synthesizer

Buy Roland DP-990-MC Designer Piano in Medium Cherry finish-with Benchr Piano in Medium Cherry finish

I and my friend spent 30 minutes trying this piano in one of our local musical stores. We and two other customers really loved the sound. It's clear and very pleasant to the ears. It's very much like good acoustic piano. It's perfect in my opinion. We compared it to 4 other digital pianos from Roland, Korg and Yamaha. None of them was as good as this one. The problem was other digital pianos were about 1/3 cheaper in price. So, they could not sound as good as this one of course. Next time, we would record this sound and then compare it to other pianos in the same price range in other stores.

However, we did compare it with the piano sound from other electronic keyboards in the same store. They were Yamaha PSR S900 ($1600) and Roland Fantom G8 ($3600). They sounded like toys. My friend planned to buy Yamaha dgx630 ($928)at first but after listening to DP 990 ($1995), he had been saving money to buy it.

I bought Yamaha PSR S900 because it has all the features I want. Its violin, drums, acoustic and electric guitars sounds are very good. Its piano sound is good when compared with other electronic keyboards, not to Roland dp 990.

If I ever need to buy a digital piano, Roland dp 990 will be on the top of my list.

Purchase Hohner Accordion Carrying Case - Three Row

This "Hohner" accordion case is of very poor quality. The case is lighter than I expected it to be and therefore feels very fragile. I don't think this case would endure well enough should something happen to it while your accordion is inside. Also, the locks do not work and the Hohner logo on it looks forged. I would not be surprised if the Hohner logo was just spray painted by someone to have this case pass as an Original Hohner Accordion Case.Get more detail about Hohner Accordion Carrying Case - Three Row.

Order Yamaha DGX230AD 76 Key Portable Grand with power

This keyboard was a Christmas gift for my son and it greatly exceeded my expectations. My son had an inexpensive Casio keyboard that had long ago served its purpose, although I didn't realize it at the time. My son asked for a better keyboard since he's interested in playing in a group with some friends. What I like about Amazon is that they make it so easy to get a lot of information about the product you're looking for, and even include links for alternative options.

Once my son opened his new gift, I was impressed by the much more sophisticated sound of the Yamaha keyboard, its expanded capabilities and the ease with which my son transitioned to its use. My son would seldom use his old keyboard to practice, but with the new Yamaha I see him practice much more and enjoying it. The Yamaha DGX230AD allowed me to exceed my son's expectations without breaking the bank.Get more detail about Yamaha DGX230AD 76 Key Portable Grand with power.

Where To Buy Blue Man Group Keyboard

I own 3 of these keyboards and they are the greatest electronic musical instruments I have ever come across. There are preprogrammed tunes to play with. You just wave your hands over the tubes and different instruments chime in. You can also control the tempo and volume by waving your hands over the tubes...almost like an orchestra conductor. There's a hookup for your ipod or mp3 player that you can play the music through this instrument and the speakers are great. You can use the keyboard to play tunes that you know and change the instruments from piano to trumpet, drum, organ, guitar, tuba, etc. WooHoo! I love them and so do my grandkids.Get more detail about Blue Man Group Keyboard.

Yamaha YPT210 61 Key Personal Keyboard (Non Factory Sealed) Review

The Yamaha YPT-210 portable keyboard is a superb lightweight keyboard with tons of features and settings that let you play and create any sound you want. There are so many features that I won't go into all of them, so I'll just keep it short. Everything from piano, organ, accordian, guitar, bass guitar, saxophone, trumpet, brass, flute, clarinet, cello, violin, percussion, synth effects, sound effects, you name it, this keyboard offers it.

This keyboard comes with a Quick Start DVD information guide that helps get you started and teaches you how to use the keyboard and its many features. This keyboard also can be used with batteries in case there is no electrical outlet around. You can program the keyboard to play on its own, also. One of the neat things is the wide variety of sound effects that can be created. Hold down a key and you can get the sounds of footsteps, a heartbeat, laughing, a horse, a dog barking, a coaster, a shower, a running stream, plus countless more sound effects. You name it, it's probably here.

I used to play keyboard in a band when I was a teenager, so I'm not a beginner, but this keyboard is great for beginners. It's actually great for anybody, beginner or not. One cool feature this has is the capability of connecting it to another MIDI device or a computer. When the keyboard is connected with a computer, it transmits the performance data and the computer receives it.

If you're a serious player or just like to goof around, this keyboard will provide everything you need to be creative. Have fun.Get more detail about Yamaha YPT210 61 Key Personal Keyboard (Non Factory Sealed).

Yamaha P37D Pianica, Keyboard Wind Instrument This instant

Yamaha P37D Pianica is really a good buy. It is portable and lite, and the sound quality is actually very good, much better than I expected. Volume and clarity of the sound is top notch. I have multiple friends who are musicians including my brother, whom I ended up giving the pianica to, and they all agreed that it's a pretty nice instrument. My bro occasionally plays piano with one hand and plays this thing with the other hand at times, and it works wonderfully. My only qualm about it was that it never feels like you fully get rid of all of the fluid by using the spit valve, but that might just be me being paranoid. Also a strap to hang this over your shoulder or around your neck would have been nice, instead of the hand grip/hand strap on the backside of the pianica. You may not look like the coolest person playing this thing while a tube is hanging from your mouth, but it does get a lot of looks and sounds great. I believe it is the same one that Masa Matsuda uses. [...]

Pros: Great sound quality. Portable because of size and carrying case. $100 is not bad at all for a good instrument that can be taken just about anywhere. Burgundy is a nice color.

Cons: Spit valve, it always feels like it still has some minute amount of condensation/fluid inside? Lack of strap to hang over shoulder/neck. You look goofy playing it :)Get more detail about Yamaha P37D Pianica, Keyboard Wind Instrument.

Hohner 3002N Cajun Ariette Accordion in Natural Immediately

Hohner should be ashamed to put their name on this Chinese-made accordion. No, wait, they don't. Lucky thing, for it would bring shame on that fine old name. I bought one of these several months ago and I've had several reeds go bad. Now I'm going to have to waste my time fixing the thing, if I can. It's sure not worth paying a pro to fix it. Even when it all works, it doesn't work very well. The action is slow and unresponsive. Yamaha PSRS900 61 Key Arranger Workstation Get it now!

I have owned an older PSR model and a DGX505 and this is by far the best keyboard that I have had. From my understanding, this is very similar to a Tyros 2 which is the more expensive model and cost more than twice as much. There is so much to this keyboard that it's going to take quite a while to learn all it's features.

I love the fact that you have over 800 voices (instruments) and the sounds are very realistic, including the sound of the hand sliding through the strings of a guitar. It has over 300 styles (accompaniment) to get you started, but you're not limited to just these styles. You are also able to download hundreds more from the internet i.e. Yamaha styles site, and specifically from the Yamaha and PSR forums. Additionally, you can download and use MIDI files and play along with them as well as use them as a learning tool. It has a very nice instructional feature where you're able to view the notes of a midi file, and even have it wait until you play the correct note before the music continues. Way Cool as some would say.

It has USB ports which means that you can use flash drives, Floppy drives with a USB connector, and even HD, CD and DVD drives with same connectors for saving and downloading files.

It has what is called an OTS (One touch setting) function (4 programable buttons) which is used to program different instruments that you want to use on a particular accompaniment(style). That makes it easy to change voices on the fly as you play your music. Lots of things you can do with this unit which includes, changing instruments, volume of each instrument, create and save your own styles ...etc.

One of it's best features are the registration keys which allows you to set up and save your different accompaniments (styles) for the songs you wish to play. It has 8 registration keys which can be saved as a bank. This means that you are able to save 8 of your predefined styles, including your choice of instruments per bank. So, there is NO limit to the number of background accompaniment (styles) you can save, because you can have several banks with 8 backgrounds each. And if you fill up the keyboards memory, there's always the USB flash drive, Floppy drive ..etc that you can save to.

And for all you budding singers out there. Who needs a Karaoke machine when you have one of these? You can attach a microphone, play a midi file, or accompany yourself, and sing to your hearts desire

I can go on and on, but the best thing to do if this interests you, is to do a search on the PSR-S900 on the internet and YouTube and you'll see it's amazing features. Also visit the Yamaha and PSR forums to get an idea just how well this keyboard is supported.

BTW: The PSR-S910 is out and unless you can get an excellent price for this one, I would opt for the newer 910. Other than that, there really isn't much difference in the two.Get more detail about Yamaha PSRS900 61 Key Arranger Workstation.

Levy's Accordion Strap, Black Buy Now

I bought these straps because they were the cheapest and came in a variety of colors. Now I will definitely be getting a new pair of straps! These straps are extremely uncomfortable. They provide absolutely no padding or support and are basically just thin strips of leather (not even very high-quality leather, I might add). Not only that, but the straps are INSANELY long. When I first adjusted them to their tightest settings, the accordion was hanging out down by my hips. I had to cut new holes about halfway up the straps just to get my accordion to sit comfortably in front of my chest. Using these straps, my shoulders hurt after just a short time of playing, and they slide around as well, specifically causing the bass side of the accordion to shift to the left. These straps are definitely a no-go!Get more detail about Levy's Accordion Strap, Black.

Casio PX-120 Privia Digital Piano Order Now

When you first open the package for this D-Piano, you will see a sleek, jet-black, contemporary digital piano. I do not call it a keyboard because it far exceeds the expectations for a keyboard. The touch-sensitive, weighted keys feel just like the keys for a real concert grand. All 88 keys are there. It performs with the sensitivity and the grandeur of a concert grand (for example, when you press the sustain pedal, play some notes, and quickly lift and press the pedal again, you will hear a remnant of the notes played being dampened and then sustained.

The only one minor drawback is the selection of recorded songs. When Casio selected the songs to package with the keyboard, they emphasized on classical piano songs whilst ignoring popular songs and songs for other included instruments (harpsichord, 3 organs, 3 E-pianos, 2 strings, vibraphone, etc.)

Otherwise, this piano is excellent when you need the performance and style of a piano at under 16 Kg (26 lbs). Visually stunning: with the added stand and pedalboard, it could pass as a piece of furniture. Overall, This IS the one keyboard that I will keep and treasure for years to come.Get more detail about Casio PX-120 Privia Digital Piano.

Low Price Johnson FI-120 Concertina 20 Button Anglo Style

I had a few problems with this item. The first button on the right keyboard was broken and rattling around loose when I got it. The people I bought it from (musician's friend) were very good about replacing it though. Now I have one that works, but some of the buttons on the left keyboard stick and others rub the buttons that stick. So I will have to open it up and do some work as R Wiltbank said in their review. I enjoy the instrument when it works right. It is very easy to transcribe music for, if you can find the sheet music.

Having 21 buttons (including the air valve) sounds like a lot but is nothing compared to the 22 frets and 6 strings of a guitar. 21 choices about where to put a finger vs. 132 with a guitar. Classic songs, sailor songs, old folk songs and even christmas carols sound interestingly different and can be learned but not mastered in the first 3 days of owning this item. I spent $100 and found out that the concertina is something I want to play. I would never ask more of a beginner's instrument. Sometimes the $5 harmonica isn't very shiny and doesn't work right, but it's always good enough to let you know if you like harmonica music or not.Get more detail about Johnson FI-120 Concertina 20 Button Anglo Style.

Discount Yamaha P140 88-Key Digital Piano (Black)

I recently did an exhaustive review of the digital piano world as I am trying to teach my children to play the piano. Accoustic pianos are not a choice due to the size, weight, cost, and tuning requirements. I love the idea of a piano that is always in tune (and can move if we move), but I wanted to be sure I was teaching my kids in a way that they could easily play a grand piano if presented with one. The biggest concern is muscle memory, and making sure their fingers are used to the feel of a real key.

Roland makes some of the top-of-the-line pianos, but they also come with a high cost. I am sure the sound might be a bit better, but I could not justify the expense. I tried out some of the higher-end Yamaha pianos, and while I was impressed, still was shocked at the cost. The P85 was the lowest cost Yamaha piano I tried that seemed it could be good for teaching. It sounded nice, feature the weighted keys with "graded hammer standard" (GHS), and was reasonably portable. However, I felt the P85 keys were a little hard to push with a little too much return. I had a higher-end Yamaha nearby (non-portable) and found the keys much better. The store also had a grand piano, and the higher-end Yamaha was much closer than the P85.

With a little research, I discovered that the high-end Yamaha pianos (the ones that cost $2k and up) use "graded hammer effect" (GHE), a step up from GHS. The P-140 was the least expensive piano to support GHE. It also has 64 note polyphony, 14 voices with 3 tonal varieties, and support for a sustain pedal (you only need 1 pedal for most playing).

What are the downsides to the P-140? Some other digital pianos have far more voices, more recording capability, and louder speakers. I think the built-in speakers on the P-140 are rather pathetic. But they are good enough for practice.

When I bought the P-140, the P-155 was being introduced. It has essentially replaced the P-140. Better speakers, 128 note polyphony, and more features, but essentially the same piano. I found a seller who was looking to liquidate his P-140's for a good price (with a free stand as well), and I decided the P-155 was not worth the extra cost. If my kids really start playing seriously, I may invest in a Roland, but for now, the P-140 makes sure they don't learn bad habits. My number one criteria was realistic action, and the least expensive way to get into the higher end GHE is the P-140.Get more detail about Yamaha P140 88-Key Digital Piano (Black).

Cheapest Williams Digital Grand Piano, black

The Williams Digital Grand Piano has got to be the best kept secret in digital musical instruments. When I first saw it on Amazon.com, I thought it must be to good to be true -- a very reasonable price that you would usually pay for just a keyboard, but in a robust and beautiful piano frame that I wouldn't be embarrassed to showcase in my living room? With so little information online, I was skeptical, to say the least. But I finally did enough digging (Amazon, you need more details, and Williams, you need to update your 3-year-old website -- this piano isn't even listed in your product pages) to convince myself that it was worth the risk.

I continued to be skeptical when I saw that this piano came with free shipping for Amazon Prime customers. I figured it must be really light-weight and/or plastic to be able to qualify for free shipping. In fact, there was a bug on Amazon.com saying it weighed only 27 pounds (when in fact, I believe it's around 227 pounds!). But once I finally overcame my risk aversion and ordered this via Amazon Prime, I got a call from FedEx National about 48 hours later asking to arrange a delivery window since it was so big and needed special handling. And it came as scheduled on the day/time promised! Since my living room is on the second floor, I had to hire a couple of guys to help me move it upstairs -- otherwise it was just too hard to move.

But I have to say, my experience from the outset was of amazement and satisfaction. First, the packaging was very nice. It was quite easy to remove it from the packaging, everything was well packed and protected, there were no problems whatsoever with the quality of the unit upon initial inspection.

Set-up was a breeze as well (aside from the physical weight, since I had to move it upstairs). It didn't take long at all before I had the whole thing up and running. You just have to turn it on its side (don't let your hired help leave just yet) and attach the legs, pedals, etc. and you're good to go. You just plug it into a standard 110V AC outlet.

Finally, on to the actual product review:

This is an astounding product in terms of quality, innovation, design, and brilliance on the part of the folks at Williams. I'd honestly never heard of them before, but it's clear they are an incredibly bright group of folks on a mission to make excellent musical products.

The keyboard action is VERY good -- it really truly feels like an acoustic piano. The key action feels as if there is a hammer hitting a string, and of course it sounds that way as well. The speakers are housed within the resonance chamber just like the strings would be in an acoustic piano -- pure genius. (Though, note that the resonance chamber is way smaller than on an acoustic baby grand, but that's just fine by me! It still looks very nice -- just like a baby grand though taking up a little less space.) In fact, the speakers point down -- 80W of power in the sound system reflects off the floor and sounds great at the right volume and settings. The backs of the speakers go into the resonance chamber which, when you open the back, gives even more full sound (just like an acoustic piano). Again, genius. You can't see it in any of the product photos, but if you open the back and prop it up with the stick (which by the way is quite nice quality as well), you just see a black material lining along the top of the resonance chamber, so it's neither attractive nor ugly but still gives the look and feel of an actual piano from across the room.

The keyboard is full sized and feels just like the real deal. They even went to the detail of having red felt along the top back edge of the keys just like on an acoustic piano.

The pedals are another bit of genius -- instead of typical digital keyboard pedals, these pedals are actual mechanical levers that operate much like those of an acoustic piano! The travel on the pedals is independently adjustable so that you can fine-tune exactly how far you want to have to press each pedal to perform its action. They ultimately go up into the bottom of the unit to depress the electronic switches that actually perform the actions (and of course they're not just binary actions, the pedal buttons have velocity sensors as well and emulate how pedals work on an acoustic piano). And since the pedals are actually secured to the body of the piano and anchored to the floor with nice screw-out floor connectors, this thing plays exactly like an acoustic baby grand or upright piano. With my old Kurzweil keyboard, the pedals would always "walk" along the floor as I pushed on them, and I'd constantly feel off my game while playing because I had to keep thinking about the pedals. Not on this amazing Williams piano! It is so realistic and comfortable to play that I truly feel as if I just bought a $5000 baby grand acoustic for a fraction of the cost.

In fact, I can't see how they can sell this piano for so little money. Yes, there are many, many other features, but I'm just impressed with the way Williams made this piano feel just like a "real" piano that would cost a LOT more.

If you're looking for a very functional piano that also serves as beautiful furniture for your great room that will impress your guests and give you hours of endless pleasure -- and awesome sound and all those wonderful digital features (MIDI, dual headphone jacks, multiple voices, selectable keyboard velocity, adjustable volume and brightness, a transpose feature, digital fine-tuning (to adjust the actual frequency offset), etc., etc., etc. -- this is the absolute best buy and will NOT disappoint you.

I am sure there are people who can't be pleased by something that either isn't acoustic, or that doesn't have the high-end digital synthesis of your well-known brands of digital keyboards. But buying this piano is not settling in the least -- despite the low-low price, the quality is astounding and you will absolutely not be disappointed. If you can't tell, I strongly recommend this product and I am in complete bliss after almost a full week of ownership. My love of piano has returned full-force with this brilliant bit of engineering on the part of Williams. I hope they read this and (aside from updating their website) know that I think they are doing absolutely awesome work!Get more detail about Williams Digital Grand Piano, black.

Buying Casio LK-220 Personal Lighted Keyboard, 61-Key, with MP3 Connection, USB Port, and 400 Tones

I absolutely love this keyboard. The built-in "song trainer" is quite helpful, teaching you the song one hand at a time and then both hands. While the built-in songs are your typical public-domain fare (e.g. Canon in D, Turkey in the Straw, Ode to Joy, etc.), they are still fun to learn and play. The USB port on the piano also lets me plug the keyboard into my MacBook with a USB cable (not included) and play/record music in GarageBand. Also, I've been shopping around and it's hard to find a beginner's keyboard with touch-sensitive keys at this price.

I take away one star due to the misleading picture. I want to note that while the Amazon image shows a keyboard stand, an AC adapter, and headphones with connector adapter, this model number of the LK220 does not include *any* of those items. Only the keyboard came in the package. Only packages with the model number LK220 PPK and LK220 AD include at least an AC adapter. This meant that I had to run on AA batteries until my AC adapter came in. But I got the keyboard at a great price, even without the AC adapter, so I'm still happy with this keyboard.Get more detail about Casio LK-220 Personal Lighted Keyboard, 61-Key, with MP3 Connection, USB Port, and 400 Tones.

Purchase Creative Prodikeys Pc-midi

Very gimmicky and cute. The main issue I had with this, was that I didn't realize how much space the (piano) keyboard took up. If you have a big desk, or a predesignated place to put the keyboard, this shouldn't be a problem. This is great for casual mixing, and small stuff. Don't expect to be using this thing for anything other then casual playing, since there isn't much range on the keys. Very useful for my own uses, but I could see it being cumbersome to anyone expecting more.

Worked well with Cakewalk, FL studio and Logic. Driver install was quick and painless, and there was a plethora of support on their site.Get more detail about Creative Prodikeys Pc-midi.

Order 88-KEY Portable Educational Keyboard

I was looking at "workstations" but couldn't figure out why they were called workstations, I was wondering if they were something that I could compose on; then I notice the entry-level workstation was three times the cost of this keyboard, and my wife saw this at BJ's Wholesale Club and offered it to me as a Christmas present... so... I listened to some samples online and liked the keyboard sound- better than my old PSR-292- so I said with a sigh, OK...

This DGX doesn't have all the voices the cheaper PSR had, and the ones it does have are same old ones, the guitars are better, but still 60's 70's; its pianos are better sounding, the 292's really couldn't stand alone; but it did have something unexpected, something I've been going crazy with and which was worth sacrificing the workstation all by itself- the pitch bender! Now I can do wild vibratos and bendings, which gives me much more expressive creations...

It has 5 5-track user songs to record original works with, just like the old 292; and just like the old 292, the memory gets full long before that! I save the keyboard's user and midi files of my creations on a budget USB drive, no problems... for mp3 files I record directly into my laptop's microphone jack from the keyboard's headphone jack (with some level adjusting) and lay down an additional track while recording, making 6 tracks, with the one live... so I create decent mp3 files to upload to tne Internet and entertain my micro-audiences...

It has a thousand features I may never explore; I've experimented with many of the settings such as pitch-bend range, reverb, and touch-sensitivity, and have discovered and used some of its unintended quirks to creative advantage...Get more detail about 88-KEY Portable Educational Keyboard.

Where To Buy Casio 76-Key Electronic Keyboard with Adaptor and Stand

I had this keyboard shipped to someone (who was at that point living in a college dorm room) for his birthday because he wanted to learn to play the piano. So I needed something of decent enough quality that he would want to use it but compact enough to not be overtly taxing on space (or on my budget). I chose this keyboard because of the good sound reviews and that fact that it came with a stand AND the adaptor (why are others sold without??) This keyboard has definitely fit the bill, and has been used for 1.5 years now with no problems, has survived multiple cross-country shipping trips, and according to the user, is 'reassuringly solid to play and well built'. Obviously it doesn't sound like a real piano, but is great for the price!Get more detail about Casio 76-Key Electronic Keyboard with Adaptor and Stand.

Shop For Casio PX-800 Privia Digital Piano with Weighted Scaled Hammer Action Keys

Overall this is a very good product. I initially shied away from this because I've associated the Casio name with cheap plastic keyboards such as the kind you buy for kids. I bought it because, overall, the ratings were much better than I expected for (my preconceived notions about) a Casio. My preconceived notions are destroyed: this is a very good product. First - and this is important - this is a piece of furniture, not a cheap hunk of black and white plastic (and therefore this paino is not portable). It is a pleasure to look at and to play. It is easy to assemble and I did it by myself. The sound is crisp and clear. Does it sound like a real grand piano? Of course not! If you want the sound of a concert grand, shell out 110k for the basic D model and enjoy! If you are like me and can't spare 110k at the moment, but still love the sound of a concert grand, you will be happy with the sound of this product at 0.007th % of the price. I have only two complaints, one minor and one of more significance. The minor one is the clacking sound made by the keys make when you are playing pp. The not so minor one is that the keys are a little too heavy and takes some getting used to. You will have to adjust when paying your D model ;-)

BTW: Two points about about assembly: (1) be careful when you unpack the piano because some of the packing material is used to aid assembly; (2) do not tighten all the bolts until everything is assembled as some of the final parts are a tight fit (I scuffed on part a bit trying to fit a right angle together).

Yamaha EZ Portable Keyboard

I first saw this item on that home shopping channel and the lady that was displaying it was as giddy as a school girl. I have to admit it did look really fun. My mom always wanted to learn to play the piano and I wanted to buy it a couple of years ago, but it was a bit expensive. We were recently out Christmas shopping and I dragged her over to it and said you HAVE to try this (she thought I was crazy since she can't play)....she CRIED! She was so happy that she could actually play (greensleeves) that she cried and giggled. I had to tell her six times that we needed to go. She wouldn't let go! So, obviously this will be her Christmas present this year. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for any music enthusiast.Get more detail about Yamaha EZ Portable Keyboard.

Akai EWI4000S Electronic Wind Controller Top Quality

I bought this for my husband for Christmas. He is a a flute and penny whistle player, and the EWI4000S is a dream come true for him. It's got many features that allow him to play as though it is a true wind instrument, but it's actually a synthesizer. I highly recommend purchasing the patches that are available (from an outside vendor), also, as they expand the instruments capability. My husband had a bit of trouble with the device behaving unpredictably (some kind of temporary glitch) but that seems to have resolved. The manual misses a few steps here and there, but there are forums online that can help you overcome any deficiencies in the manual. We highly recommend this instrument. He's addicted to it now.Get more detail about Akai EWI4000S Electronic Wind Controller.

Williams Symphony Elite Digital Piano This instant

My 8 year old son has been taking piano lessons for almost 2 years and has a real talent for it. His piano teacher uses a Casio keyboard that has a foot pedal attached. She kept advising me that he needed a pedal for his keyboard to sustain notes. His Casio "Magic Light" keyboard was purchased 10 years ago as a birthday present for my husband (which he never used). It works great, but doesn't support a foot pedal. Also, the cheaper keyboards do not duplicate the "hammer-action" weighted response of keys on a real piano. Lastly, a full-size keyboard is 88 keys, but ours had only 60 something. I was having a discussion with his piano teacher as to my options. Buying a new piano was out of the question; we're talking 10-20 thousand dollars. However, you can purchase second hand pianos for a few thousand dollars, or "adopt" a used piano for nothing but the cost of having it delivered. A guitar teacher overheard us and offered a wonderful alternative: a digital piano. As he said, "It looks like a real piano, it sounds like a real piano, but it doesn't cost as much as a real piano." He advised us to visit a Cafe next store which had a digital piano in the back. We did, and it was a Yamaha digital piano. It had a brown wood finish and an understated beauty. I immediately was excited and would have gone out that day to buy one. My son was not equally excited, however. It did not look like a real piano to him (which he still wanted). I went online and looked at other brands of digital pianos and noticed the "Williams Symphony Elite Digital Piano." My son was hooked when he saw this one. It looks very much like a real piano. I purchased it online (it costs $899 at virtually any site you order it from). There are two other models: the Williams Console digital piano, which looks to be a regular digital piano with no bells and whistles and it looks like black wood; the next level one is the Williams Overture 88-key digital piano. It has all sorts of digital effects and also has the black wood. The Williams website compares the "Overture" model and the "Symphony Elite" model as the difference between driving a Cadillac and a Bentley. You're paying a few hundred extra for the glossy black finish, more digital effects, etc. Not knowing much about the technical details, I decided to go with the "Bentley" of the Williams line, the Symphony Elite. I would rather spend a little extra and have a piano that will last my son for several years as he expands his technical knowlege. The piano arrived two days ago. My husband said it was delivered curbside by UPS Roadway. This is because the box is quite heavy. He had to open the box in our sunporch and carry pieces upstairs to our second floor individually. I wasn't home when he assembled the piano, but he had no complaints of it being difficult. When he called me at work after assembling it, he referred to it as being a "monstrosity". It measures approximately 55 inches across the top. It has a glossy black finish like a grand piano. The music rest is gorgeous. It has a stainless steel "W" logo on it. There are two shiny brass little wands that can be pulled up to support your songbook or music sheets. This is a great improvement over the steel wire that didn't hold up much of anything on his old Casio Magic Light. Also, there is the delightful keyboard cover that slides out over the keys, again, just like a real piano. Finally, there are the three foot pedals identical to a real piano. Just as a piece of furniture, it is aesthetically beautiful. I don't pretend to know all of the technical details (you can find them listed under the piano picture above), but it has over a hundred voices, effects, demos, computer connectivity via USB, and the ability to record yourself. Hidden discreetly under the piano to your left are jacks for using headphones,USB/MIDI and to plug in a microphone. It also has a metronome. My son sounds great when he uses the church organ voice. The beauty of this piano is not only in its appearance, but in the freedom to enjoy the various effects of a keyboard. When my son plays this piano, it looks like I should put a candelabra on top of it! He is very happy, because he feels like he is playing a real piano.Get more detail about Williams Symphony Elite Digital Piano.

Casio CTK-671 Portable Electronic Keyboard, 61-Note Touch-Sensitive Best Quality

Love this keyboard! The touch sensitivity is easily worth any perceived compromises in sound quality compared to Yamaha or other comparably-priced products. The button layout & functionality is comprehensive without being overwhelming. Manual is good--and on-line. Backlit display is also a plus, as is the midi connectivity & modest recording capability. Sound quality of pianos & organs is especially good. Not sure if that quality would be maintained direct through a p.a., but it is certainly of high enough quality for home recording & use in small clubs. Sounds are very tweakable, and the advanced tones are for the most part immediately useful. Guitar tones are good. Obviously more expression is possible playing an actual guitar, but here again the touch feature helps--if you hit the keys hard, you get a much more dynamic response than from playing lightly. Sustain pedal is very useful for not much money. Back is tapped for two retention bolts for use on a stand, but I would be more comfortable gigging with it in a flight case of some sort. Casio calls this keyboard "high-grade," and that's an accurate assessment--it's much better than most keyboards in the $100-200 price range, and is definitely not a toy but a real, expressive musical instrument.Get more detail about Casio CTK-671 Portable Electronic Keyboard, 61-Note Touch-Sensitive.

Novation X-Station 25, 25 Key, 2 Octave Synthesizer, and Audio USB MIDI Controller Keyboard, X-STATION 25 Get it now!

Im a long time fan of Novation gear. i have owned the BassStation keyboard, the MM10, the MM10x, the Novation Nova, and also the Novation SuperNova, as well as the A-Station in the last 10 years or so. Novation makes great stuff. AND the X-Station is no exception to that. Novation is known for its liguid analog sounding equipment and is one of the best makers of VA or virtual analog tone generators. All their gear is made to last, and it does. Never had any problems with Novation gear.

This board is a great controller board and also has its own merrit as a great little Synth too. This little board has aftertouch, which is pretty amazing and also has a the full sized keys which is important for me due to my large hands. Another cool thang is that this board has both a joystick and an X/Y touch pad for full control and massive expressiveness in your playing. this means a lot of fun and experimentation is available. Add in the 55 assignable controllers, including the 3 encoders, 16 pots, 9 sliders, and 22 buttons. I guess i should mention that it will help to read your owners manual. :)) if you need more than 25 keys, they do make a 37 key version too, and more.

And dont forget, it is a fully featured harware synthesizer with 3 oscilators and 8 voice polyphany!! wow! amazing AND it runs on batteries. Oh yeah, and i almost forgot to mention the small footprint this baby has. it is very convenient in that regard too. you can keep it nearby and just grab it when you need it. This is a classic machine that will not go out of style or become redundant. Novation is a great company when it comes to upgrades and keeping their machines up to date. They are a Brittish firm and they have a solid reputation.Get more detail about Novation X-Station 25, 25 Key, 2 Octave Synthesizer, and Audio USB MIDI Controller Keyboard, X-STATION 25.
